Meet Stephania

Stephania’s journey to rebuilding strength, self-worth, and a sense of possibility with Dress for Success NSW & ACT.

When Stephania first walked into Dress for Success, she wasn’t there for herself. She had come simply to donate designer pieces on behalf of a friend, items she had been helping sort through as part of her work as a stylist. What she didn’t expect was that this simple act of generosity would become a turning point in her own story.

At the time, Stephania was preparing for a five-day court hearing, emotionally charged, deeply confronting, and arriving at a moment in her life when she felt depleted. Once confident in her fashion and media career, she now struggled to pull together even the basics she needed for the week ahead.
“I could still make others feel good,” she says. “But I had stopped feeling that way about myself.”

Her friend, whose mother had once been supported by Dress for Success, gently encouraged her to seek help. Another friend had mentioned DFS as well. “Sometimes you get whispers, and then a nudge,” Stephania says. “It was like the universe pointing me to the right place at exactly the right moment.”

Walking into her first styling appointment, Stephania was greeted by Meryl - a volunteer stylist whose warmth immediately softened the weight she had been carrying. “Meryl made me feel truly seen,” she recalls. “She moved with such grace. She didn’t just style me, she understood me.”
“I felt like Audrey Hepburn. Elegant, strong, timeless. I wore that dress on the day I was cross-examined. It held me together.”
Meryl even handed her pantyhose and shared bra tips, little details that made Stephanie feel cared for, not just dressed.
“It wasn’t just about clothes. It was humanity. It was dignity.”
Before coming to Dress for Success, Stephania had been navigating trauma, financial hardship, and emotional exhaustion as a mother of four, a full-time student, and a freelancer trying to rebuild. “I was burned out. I didn’t feel beautiful. I didn’t feel like myself.” But something shifted in that changeroom. The fabrics, the colours, the attention to detail, the way she was encouraged to choose what felt right. It lit something up in me again,” she says. “DFS helped me remember my worth.”

Alongside her styling session, Stephania accessed the Career Hub and several workshops. "The LinkedIn workshop gave me practical tools I could apply the same day,” she says. “The online platform is such a gift - accessible, welcoming, and full of resources for women rebuilding their careers.”

When asked about the most powerful part of her experience, Stephania doesn’t hesitate:
“That moment with Meryl. Being seen. Being cared for. Being reminded that I still had strength inside me.”
The black dress became a symbol of resilience, a reminder that even in moments of fear or uncertainty, she could show up with confidence and grace.
Today, Stephania feels a renewed sense of empowerment. She is taking on creative projects with a fresh spark of courage and imagining a future filled with possibility rather than limitation. "DFS gave me back the confidence that had gone dormant. I carry myself differently now, with my shoulders back and my head high.”
